Category: Buying Guides
Compare three distinct metal dice sets—gold D6s, Otzi the Iceman D20, and Prismatic Flames—to find the right RPG dice for your play style and budget.
Quick answer
For most players, the Moonlit Lantern: Prismatic Flames set offers the best balance of variety, weight, and value, but your ideal choice depends on whether you need a full set, a specialty D20, or a handful of gold D6s.
What to consider before buying metal dice
Metal dice feel heavier and roll differently than plastic ones. They can dent softer surfaces, so a dice tray or mat is recommended. Also, metal dice cost more per die, so you want to be sure the set matches your game needs.
The three sets here serve very different roles: a complete 7-piece set, a single oversized D20, and a pack of six D6s. None is universally better—each shines in a specific scenario.
Trade-offs to keep in mind
The Prismatic Flames set gives you a full polyhedral set with a unique enamel-painted design, but it costs more upfront. The Otzi D20 is a conversation piece and a great gift, but you only get one die. The gold D6s are perfect for games that use only D6s or for adding extra damage dice, but they won't cover percentile or D20 rolls.
How to choose: decision rules
- Choose the Prismatic Flames set if...: You need a full polyhedral set (D4, D6, D8, D10, D10%, D12, D20) for games like D&D or Pathfinder. The enamel paint and custom mold give it a unique look that stands out from plain metal dice. Best all-in-one choice for most RPG players.
- Choose the Otzi D20 if...: You want a single, oversized D20 as a showpiece, a gift, or a special roll die. The 40mm size and mummy wrap design make it easy to spot and fun to use. It is not a full set, so you will need other dice to play. Ideal as a secondary die or collector's item.
- Choose the gold D6s if...: You play games that rely on D6 dice (e.g., Shadowrun, Warhammer, board games) or you want extra D6s for damage rolls in D&D. The metal tin keeps them organized and portable. Great for D6-heavy systems or supplementing an existing set.
