Dice Vault vs Leatherette Mat: Which Storage Suits Your Dice?

Quick answer

Choose a resin dice vault for maximum protection of a single sharp edge resin dice set, especially if you carry dice loose in a bag. Choose a roll-up leatherette dice mat if you want a combined rolling surface and storage pouch for play on the go.

Protection vs. portability

A resin dice vault is a rigid container that holds one standard 7-piece set in a honeycomb cutout. The rigid walls and magnetic closures keep dice from shifting, which matters for sharp edge resin dice whose corners can chip when they knock against each other or hard objects. A leatherette dice mat is soft and flexible; it rolls up for storage and includes a zipper pouch for dice, but it does not provide rigid protection against crushing or impact. If you often toss your dice into a backpack without a separate hard case, the vault is the safer choice. If you prioritize a compact, all-in-one solution for rolling and carrying, the mat wins on convenience.

Capacity and set compatibility

The Sharp Edge Resin Dice Vault - Ocean Waters is designed to hold one standard size 7-piece RPG dice set. That makes it ideal if you travel with a single favorite set and want dedicated protection. The Dragon Scale Roll Up Leatherette Dice Mat has a zipper pouch that can hold dice, but the catalog does not specify a maximum capacity. If you need to carry multiple sets or oversized dice, the mat's pouch may be more flexible, but you should verify dimensions before relying on it for large collections. Neither product includes dice, so plan to supply your own set.

Table protection and rolling surface

The leatherette dice mat doubles as a rolling surface, protecting your table and your dice during play. The resin dice vault is purely for storage and does not provide a rolling area. If you frequently play in places where a soft rolling surface is desirable—like wooden tables or shared gaming spaces—the mat adds value. However, if you already have a dedicated dice tray or rolling area, the vault's storage-focused design may be sufficient.

Key trade-offs

• Protection: Resin vault offers rigid, magnetic protection for one set; leatherette mat offers soft, flexible storage without impact resistance. If your dice share a bag with heavy items, the vault prevents chips better.
• Portability: Vault is a compact hard case; mat rolls up and includes a pouch, but may be bulkier when unrolled for play. For minimalist travel, the vault is more pocket-friendly; for combined rolling and storage, the mat is more convenient.
• Versatility: Mat provides a rolling surface and can hold dice in its pouch; vault is storage-only and sized for a single 7-piece set. If you need a rolling surface, the mat eliminates the need for a separate tray.
